What is an alpaca?

Alpacas are members of the camelid family and are related to the llama, vicuna and guanaco, all from South America.  There are two types of alpacas, Huacaya and Suri.  Huacaya alpacas have a teddy bear appearance and a tighter crimp to their fiber.  Suri alpacas are more rare, and they have a long, silky pencil lock fiber.  Alpaca fiber is considered a luxury fiber, much like cashmere.  Alpaca fiber has no lanolin (like sheep wool) and therefore it is not scratchy and it is hypoallergenic.  Alpaca fiber is very lightweight and is said to be 7 times warmer than wool. Alpacas are shorn each year and can produce approx 7-8 pounds of fiber per year.  Luxury alpaca fiber can sell for $3-$6 an ounce.  Yarn made from alpaca fiber can sell for around $60, while a sweater made from alpaca fiber can sell for around $200.

Our mission is to produce the highest quality Suri alpaca fiber and to insure longevity of the Suri breed.
